Master Certified Coach (MCC)

ICF Definition Coaching
Coaching is partnering with individuals in a thought-provoking and creative process, in a confidential, safe, non-judgmental environment that inspires them to sort out their options, and make choices to maximize their personal
and professional potential.

I understand these clear distinctions between the following professions:

Professional Coaching is a distinct service that focuses on an individual’s future life as it relates to goal setting, outcome creation, and personal change management. The emphases in a coaching relationship are on choice, action, accountability, and follow through. The vehicle is Socratic questioning.

Consulting is a contractual business arrangement whereby an organization retains a consultant for the purpose of accessing specialized expertise. While consulting approaches vary widely, there is often an assumption that the consultant diagnoses problems, prescribes and frequently implements solutions.

Training is based on the acquisition of certain learning objectives set out by the trainer or instructor. Though objectives are clarified in the coaching process, they are established by the individual (or team) being coached with guidance provided by the coach. Training assumes a linear learning path that coincides with an established curriculum.

Mentoring is guidance from one in the same profession with expertise, experience, and knowledge in a specific industry and/or career development. It is sometimes confused with coaching. Although Coaches are often mentors to new coaches, they are not typically mentors to those they coach. The difference lies in the fact that coaches ask question, and mentors advise. Coaches ask and listen, while mentors listen and provide professional guidance. Mentoring often provides guidance and advice.

Therapy generally deals with healing pain, dysfunction, and conflict within an individual or in relationships between two or more associated or related people. The focus is on resolving difficulties arising from the past which hamper the individual’s emotional functioning in the present, improving their overall psychological functioning, and dealing with present life and work circumstances in more emotionally healthy ways.
